Dec 2009 - ANOTHER WIN FOR DETROIT WAZA
TAYLOR, MI - The Detroit Waza, last year's US Open Arena Soccer Championship runner-up, have again advanced past the first round, beating the Cincinnati Saints 9-2 at the Taylor Sportsplex.  The Scicluna brothers led the way for Detroit. Dominic Scicluna had two goals and three assists and Tino Scicluna recorded a hat trick.  Drew Ducker also added two goals.  The Waza led 5-0 at halftime. Goalkeeper Kris Lyons allowed just two goals and lost his shutout bid in the fourth quarter.  Detroit returns to action Sunday against their chief rival, 1790 Cincinnati Express. Game time is 4:40 at Total Soccer Royal Oak.

DETROIT WAZA VICTORIOUS ON THE ROAD
CLEVELAND, OH – Twenty-five saves from keeper Kris Lyons helped lead the Detroit Waza to a 10-5 victory over the Ohio Vortex at the Cleveland Multiplex. It was another high-scoring affair with 15 goals in 60 minutes. Tommy Eller led Detroit with two goals, while Steve Gillespie was among five Vortex players with a goal. Forward Dado Girozdanic contributed an assist for Ohio, while Darrel Quinn added two for the Waza. The clubs found themselves tied 2-2 at the end of the first quarter. Detroit was able to take a 4-3 lead at the half. The Waza were able to add three more goals before forward Adis Kuduzovic was able to sneak one past the Detroit keeper. This brought Detroit's lead to 7-4 at the end of the third quarter. Dominic Scicluna would go on to score one of three Detroit goals in the fourth quarter. Ohio’s Israel Jones converted a power play goal in the final minute of the match to settle the score at 10-5. The Detroit Waza (3-2) will return home to face a U.S. Open opponent on Sunday, December 13. Meanwhile Ohio Vortex (0-3) will have time to regroup before facing the 1790 Cincinnati Express on December 19 in their final appearance at the Multiplex.

The Waza Strike BackPASL-Pro logo

12/9/09 -  The Detroit Waza was coming off two straight brutal losses and the 1790 Cincinnati Express was undefeated at 3-0.  When these two teams met on Sunday it had the potential to put a lot of distance between the defending Eastern Division champions and their division rivals.

Instead, Detroit dropped a 10-spot on the league's top defensive team.  Their 10-6 win keeps the division very much wide open.   Drew Ducker (two goals, three assists) and Matt Johnson (goal, three assists) had big nights for the Waza.

July 2009 - Hundreds turn out for soccer camp - The soccer field at Buccaneer Stadium was buzzing with activity Wednesday afternoon as hundreds of young children and dozens of volunteer coaches participated in the hugely popular Mike Herman Memorial Soccer Camp. Kids from across West Michigan participated in the camp, while many current and former Buccaneers' players served as coaches at the camp. Many of those in attendance were friends of Mike Herman, who died in a car accident in November of 2005, just a few months into his sophomore year at GHHS. "We do it for Mike Herman, who was an all-state soccer player as a sophomore who was taken from the earth a little early," said Jon Dault, who organizes the event. "All the volunteers are high school and college soccer players who played with Mike, and they're all here helping out the professionals to instruct the kids." Dault started this camp last summer as a way to offer a free soccer option to kids across West Michigan who can't afford a high-priced soccer camp. To help lead the way, Dault worked with the Waza FC Soccer Club in Detroit. Wednesday, Mario Scicluna, development director of Waza FC soccer club, was leading the instruction. Scicluna has played soccer internationally and professionally in the United States, and has a wealth of coaching knowledge to pass along to both the young campers and the instructors. "This is great because we're out here teaching the young kids about soccer, and in the process, their instructors are learning the game as they pass it down to these younger players," said Scicluna, who played collegiately at Western Michigan University.  The Mike Herman Memorial Soccer Camp is open to youngsters in grades 3-8. Each participant receives a free soccer ball, and an organization called Cleats for Kids donated soccer cleats to those who didn't have their own soccer shoes. "The Mike Herman soccer camp was started to help kids who can't afford going to camp want to enjoy a huge camp, an experience they probably otherwise couldn't get," Dault said. "We have professional soccer players coming in to instruct them for free." Dault hoped for around 300 participants this year, and was pleased to note on Wednesday that the total exceeded that goal by around 30 kids.

July 2009 - Dominic Scicluna made the front page of the paper in Kigali Rwanda, Africa.  Dom played with Drogba, Eto'o, YaYa Toure, Kolo Toure, plus many other International stars.  Most people only get to play with these guys on FIFA 2009, but he played with them on the pitch!
