INFORMATION

MISSION: Building a coalition of like-minded groups, committed to positively developing our youth and teaching them life skills through the vehicle of soccer

WHO: Soccer Waza LLC and the Waza FC soccer club, in partnership with Earhart, Neinas, Roberto Clemente, Phoenix Academy, Webster, Mayberry, Bennett, Logan & Clippert Schools of Southwest Detroit.

WHAT: Establish after school soccer programs to be supported by the above named schools and the staff of Waza LLC and Waza FC.

Intramural School Leagues: Each of the above named schools will setup 4.8 teams in grades 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th & 5th where applicable and 6th 7th and 8th for the middle schools.  (Waza will provide introductory clinics for kindergarten, teaching fundamental skills through fun games).  Working in conjunction with Waza trained volunteers from each participating school, Waza will develop a flexible program fitting the needs and interest of each school and grade level.  The program will begin with a form of indoor soccer . Futsol . which can be played on a basketball court and consists of 1 goalie + four field players. Futsol is a great way to develop the skills of young players.. The children will train and play weekly after school. We will call this league the Waza Futsol Federation

Intramural School Leagues: Once a month, the Waza Futsol Federation of Schools will compete intramurally.  Each school will select their most deserving players to compete in the intramural games against other schools based on their talent, grades, good sportsmanship and positive community impact. Each school will form one team in each age group to compete against other. Waza Futsol Federation School teams, with the hosting venue to be determined at the start of the Waza Futsol Federation season.

Think Detroit PAL: We will combine players from the Waza Futsol Federation of Southwest Schools into the Think Detroit PAL soccer league which competes at Historic Fort Wayne on Saturday’s Spring and Fall.  We will work with Phoenix Academy and Erhart along with think Detroit Pal and Waza to subsidize the cost for the children.

Waza State Select, Premier Leagues: The next tier of achievement, once a proven sustainable program of development is in place, will be dual-rostering interested players to the Waza FC premier developmental league club. Rostering players in this premier league will allow them to compete at their highest potential possible as they develop naturally through oversight from professional trainers within the Waza FC Club.

WHEN: This program is projected to launch Fall 2009

WHY: There is an overwhelming need and desire for a sustainable quality program in Southwest Detroit.  Our program will give the children of the community a positive outlet keeping them off the streets and moving, working toward creating more opportunity for them with exercise, positive visualization, and achievement through the vehicle of soccer.

HOW: Each school will have a Program Director who will be responsible for recruitment of volunteers which will include; coaches, team managers, equipment managers, fundraisers & administrators.

Waza will be responsible for the training and oversight of the volunteers to keep the program running on track and smoothly.  Waza has a used soccer equipment donation program with which we give away gently used equipment to Africa & South America.  Waza will now funnel that equipment directly to the children of Southwest Detroit.

WHERE: Each School will have their own intra.school program ideally located on their campus either in the field, gym or parking lot.  We also plan to use Clyde Park, Patton Park, Romaninski Park, and Clark Park. Ultimately we plan to lobby the city to develop new parks and indoor facilities with the abundance of unused space in the City.

SoccerWaza's Dominic and Mario Scicluna have recently participated in a series of Career Days in Southwest Detroit’s elementary schools.  Stemming from the overwhelming response to all things soccer, and a serious lack of organized sports in the area, Waza has designed a program in partnership with the schools of that community to implement after school soccer in Southwest Detroit to begin in the fall.  This massive undertaking (which we are extremely excited about) will happen because we are dedicated to giving the children of Detroit more opportunities and outlets for their energy, helping to keep them off the streets and productive.

As a kick.off to this program and to introduce Waza to anyone who had yet to be informed, we hosted a free day of Soccer on Wednesday June 17th from 1:30.3:00 in Clark Park.  This event also served a dual purpose as SoccerWaza is also involved with the $1 dollar campaign to help the victims of the Rwandan genocide.  Anyone who brought  a dollar received  an icee pop with all proceeds going toward the $1dollar campaign. Everyone was welcome to come to our clinic and to play soccer.  It was a very beautiful thing to see the generosity of money and mostly spirit that these young children demonstrated toward the children of Rwanda.

We want to thank the coaches and volunteers and also the children for coming out and supporting our efforts for the $1 dollar campaign and helping to get the word out about our new Southwest Detroit Waza!!  We look forward to the fall when our program starts.

Here are some pictures the kids made thanking Waza for coming to their school...
